Have My Cake and Eat it Too

When Henry and I devised our budget a couple of years ago, we included "monthly money" for each of us to spend on whatever we want, but includes things like clothes and "non-necessary toiletries" (our budget discussions can get a little intense).  We get to use this money unless there's a holiday or vacation or something going on, in which case the money is put towards that.  This may sound ridiculous to some, but it's really a method to curb my spending/keep it under control....

As of right now, I'm thinking my January money (and part of February's), will be put towards this: (instead of the new work clothes I could really use - priorities!)

Kate Spade

I love the style, and the message!  I know these cakes have been floating all over the interwebs, but I can't wait to make one, so I had to post a few pics of my favorites:

Heart of Gold

This sweet little gold heart jewelry I've seen lately is certainly golden to me...

"In God we Trust" Sweet Nothing Necklace from Madewell

Mini heart studs - via Kate Spade and Etsy

All of these pieces remind me of my favorite necklace - which Katie also has of course. She actually gave me mine after I was jealous of hers. It's the necklace Katherine Heigl wears in 27 Dresses. You can't find it online (the below picture is my actual necklace), but Helen Ficalora will still sell it to you if you call or email about it (last we checked). It is the prettiest, dantiest little gold heart locket.

Valentine's Day is coming up... time to start dropping those hints!

Blue Suede Shoes

I'm with Elvis... blue suede shoes are pretty cool. And if I buy one of these pairs I like, I really would appreciate it if you didn't step on them.

I spotted these wedges on Kendi Everyday:
Buy them at LuLu's.

See how cute they look? (image via Kendi)

They inspired me to find more blue suede shoes. There are lots of vibrant options out there, but I tend to gravitate towards the navy pairs. Here are a few more I like:

And I also really like these funky loafers from Steve Madden:

Some lyrics from "Blue Suede Shoes" (in case you didn't catch them all):

You can burn my house,
Steal my car,
Drink my liquor
From an old fruitjar.

Do anything that you want to do, but uh-uh,
Honey, lay off of my shoes
Don't you step on my blue suede shoes.
You can do anything, but lay off of my blue suede shoes.

See? This is serious stuff.

The Mask

What a terrible movie, right?

Yeah, this post isn't really about an old, annoying Jim Carrey movie.  Henry and I returned this past weekend from 2 weeks in Japan!  We had an amazing trip, visiting his family and learning so much about the country, specifically Okinawa and Miyako, the two islands where his family lives.  While the trip was great, recovering from the jet lag hasn't been as fun.  Last night I got home from work at 8:30 and fell asleep in my clothes when I went up to our room to change into sweats.

I think drinking a ton of water is the #1 way to fight jet lag and feel great while you travel.  But my savior on this trip was this guy:

From Bibon on Etsy
I could (and did) sleep anywhere with this thing on!  It is super comfy and really blocks out all light, making my sleep on the plane more restful.  Our curtains don't block out all the light in our bedroom, so I've been wearing it at home too - it's the best. I've had less substantial and cheaper eye masks before, and they really don't compare.  I highly recommend ordering one of these (or finding something like it) if you are in search of better sleep!

The Bright Side of Being Sick

via my Pinterest

There was just one thing on the agenda this past weekend... recovering from a painful sore throat/flu virus thingy I came down with on Friday. While I felt awful, the weekend was actually pretty fun...

I watched a lot of this (can never get enough Carrie and Big drama):

Read this:

Hilarious. Unsurprisingly, Katie and I finished reading this book on the exact same day, and we didn't even know we were both reading it. We both wished the book had included a few more behind-the-scenes juice from the Office (like what it's like getting to hang out with John Krasinski all the time). Mindy Kaling is such a funny girl, and I believe that if she weren't a famous TV writer/actor, and we lived in the same city, we would be best friends.

Started reading this:

So far I am loving it. It's an amazing true story about a woman from a very unconventional family (and very irresponsible parents) who has great success in life against all odds... and has this unconditional love for the dysfunctional family she came from.

I also watched this:

And this:

Neither of them were fantastic movies, as you would assume, but they played their proper role in taking my mind off of my swollen throat. My SJP kick was definitely the reason for watching #2, even though I was fully aware it wouldn't be award winning. There were some sweet moments. And Bad Teacher was actually really funny. And I love Jason Segel (Marshall to me).

(All books/movie images found on Amazon.)

So as you can see I had a very unproductive, but relaxing (as relaxing as things can be when it feels like you're swallowing knives) weekend. The best part of it all though was my amazing husband, waiting on me hand and foot - pampering is probably a better way to put it - and making me endless hot beverages AND homemade chicken noodle soup. He's the best.

What are your favorite sick day pastimes?
